Brushing & Flossing With Braces

You know clean teeth matter even more during treatment. Here's exactly how to do it right with brackets and wires in the way.

2×2 Brush at least twice a day, two minutes each time, preferably after meals
Floss at least once per day, every day, no skipping
F Always use a fluoride toothpaste to protect enamel during treatment

Step One

Brushing the Right Way

Start with the right tools: either a soft-bristle brush or a bi-level brush (shorter bristles in the middle, longer at the edges) works well. Used carefully, an electric toothbrush is just as effective, but keep it on a moderate power level and don't let its vibrations cause the back of the brush to hit your braces.

Brush with a fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day, preferably after meals, for at least two minutes each time. Cover every tooth surface: the outside, the inside, and the chewing surfaces. Be especially careful to clean between the wires and your teeth, and between the brackets and your gums, that's exactly where food particles get trapped.

Step Two

Flossing Under the Archwire

Floss at least once a day. But how do you get floss under the archwire of your braces? It's not hard with a floss threader. Using one is a bit like threading a needle: pull one end of the floss through the threader, then push the threader, carrying the free end of the floss with it, under the archwire. Grab the floss at both ends and slide it gently between your teeth and up to the gum line.

A water pick (oral irrigator) is another helpful tool: it shoots a small stream of pressurized water that dislodges food trapped in nooks and crannies. It's not a substitute for brushing and flossing, but used alongside proper technique, it's very effective.

Why so strict? Healthy teeth and gums respond better to treatment, and keeping everything clean helps your braces do their job without delay. Our staff will review these techniques with you when your braces go on, and if you ever have questions, just ask. For the full picture, see our oral hygiene guide and foods to avoid.
